The story

Tucked into the cliffs above Ouaisné, La Cotte de St Brelade is a deep granite cave where Neanderthals lived more than 200,000 years ago. Mammoth bones, hand-axes and rare teeth have been excavated here — the cave itself is fenced off, but you can view it from the headland above and read about the dig at Jersey Museum.

What to expect

Stand above one of the most significant Ice Age sites in Europe — the views over Ouaisné are a bonus.

Good to know

The cave interior is closed for safety; binoculars help. Best combined with a walk over Portelet Common.

It was an amazing experience at the cliff and beach. I really enjoyed spending time on the cliff. We walked uphill to see the marvelous views, with violet flowers lining the walkway on both sides. The view from the top was perfect for taking pictures.

One of the top Paleolithic sites but access is very difficult and is prohibited due to the risk of rockfalls. Much more to see at la Hougue bie museum where finds are displayed. A sea kayak tour is a great way to explore this rarely visited spot.

Beautiful and quiet part of the island, with spectacular views across Ouaisne and St Brelades Bay. Great for walking with well kept paths.
