The story

Tucked into the cliffs above Ouaisné, La Cotte de St Brelade is a deep granite cave where Neanderthals lived more than 200,000 years ago. Mammoth bones, hand-axes and rare teeth have been excavated here — the cave itself is fenced off, but you can view it from the headland above and read about the dig at Jersey Museum.

What to expect

Stand above one of the most significant Ice Age sites in Europe — the views over Ouaisné are a bonus.

Good to know

The cave interior is closed for safety; binoculars help. Best combined with a walk over Portelet Common.
