The story

Bouley Bay, a horseshoe-shaped cove nestled on Jersey's rugged northern coastline, provides a dramatic setting for coasteering. This activity, deeply entwined with the island's maritime spirit, involves traversing the intertidal zone by foot, swimming, and jumping. The bedrock here, sculpted over millennia by powerful tides and relentless weather, creates a natural adventure playground of rock formations, hidden gulleys, and deep-water pools. Local providers, such as Pure Adventure, have long championed this unique way to experience Jersey's shoreline, offering a perspective unseen from land or boat. It's an intimate encounter with the island's geology and marine environment, steeped in the wild, untamed character of the north coast.

What to expect

Gear up in a provided wetsuit, buoyancy aid, and helmet before heading to the water's edge. Under the guidance of qualified instructors, you'll navigate the barnacle-covered rocks, clambering and scrambling along the base of the cliffs. The adventure unfolds with swims through narrow channels and grottoes carved by the sea, culminating in jumps from progressively higher ledges into the deep, clear waters of Bouley Bay. Sessions are meticulously planned around the significant tidal movements here, ensuring both safety and optimal conditions for exploration and exhilarating leaps. Expect a dynamic and active exploration of the coastline.

Highlights

  • Scramble over ancient coastal rock formations
  • Swim through hidden sea channels

Where you'll find it

Bouley Bay is tucked away on Jersey's northern coast in the parish of Trinity, offering a secluded feel. From St Helier, follow signs north towards Trinity and then Bouley Bay. Parking is available near the bay. The narrow, winding roads leading down to the cove offer scenic glimpses of the rugged coastline. The bay itself is home to a small cafe and often provides a tranquil spot for contemplation after your adventure.

Insider tip

Ensure you bring an old pair of lace-up trainers or similar sturdy closed-toe shoes that you are happy to get thoroughly wet and potentially scuffed, as these provide crucial grip and protection on the rocks.

Best time to visit

Sessions are typically scheduled around the tides, often during calmer sea conditions, making any clear day suitable for this coastal adventure.

Good to know

Minimum age usually 8. Bring an old pair of trainers you don't mind getting wet.

Just returned from a fantastic 10-day trip to the Maldives organised by Bouley Bay Dive Centre. The reef diving was superb and involved two dive centres, one in Fuvahmulah, the other in Dhangethi. We saw Tiger sharks, Manta rays, Whitetips and it was easy to lose track of the number of different highly coloured reef fish! Adam and Toyah worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of what was a very busy trip, even doubling as rescue divers to ensure everyone was safe. Would highly recommend and can't wait for the next trip!

I’ve been diving with bouley bay for years and they are always amazing, but I was blown away by the organisation and attention to detail from them on the recent Maldives trip, everyday was an adventure both underwater and above it.

I done my open water, advanced open water and dry suit with this team and have to say there really fantastic. They really went out their way This group would always be my go to for diving and water related courses and experiences. I also joined in on a trip rhey organised to go the maldives and have to say the dive crews and accommodations as well as travel plans were exceptional. They were there from staet to finish to make sure everyone was completely taken care of in amd out the water and as per made sure I was ok in the water being rhe least experienced diver. Theor level of professionalism amd client care cannot be matched and on top of that they are genuinely very supportive and lovely people to be with. They always want rhe besr possible experience for you. Client care is second to none. Ive always felt complety safe in the water with these guys and have literally trusted them with my life, and will do again until ive gained more experience. I couldn't rate these guys high enough and would always suggest you make them your dive team too. There absolutely worth it.
