Noirmont Point & Batterie Lothringen

The story

During the German Occupation, Noirmont was transformed into one of Jersey's most heavily fortified coastal defences. This strategic position offered commanding views, crucial for coastal surveillance and protection. The network of concrete bunkers, gun emplacements, and observation posts, collectively known as Batterie Lothringen, formed a pivotal part of the Atlantic Wall. Today, many of these structures remain, some carefully restored, others standing as raw, weather-beaten monuments amongst the gorse and heather. Walking this headland is to step into a tangible piece of the island's fraught past, where the scars of conflict have gradually softened into a landscape of quiet contemplation.

Where you'll find it

Noirmont Point is situated on the south-west coast, jutting out from St Brelade into the sea. Access is primarily by car, with parking available near the headland. From here, a network of footpaths leads to the various fortifications and viewpoints. It's a short drive from St Aubin, making it a convenient stop for those exploring the western parishes. The views stretch across the bay towards St Helier and Elizabeth Castle.
