The story

Howard Davis Park is St Helier's most elegant green space — a gift to the island in memory of a son lost at sea. Behind wrought-iron gates you'll find immaculate flower borders, a sub-tropical garden, a bandstand that hosts free summer concerts and a quiet war cemetery.

What to expect

Free, central and immaculate — easily the best picnic spot within walking distance of town.

Good to know

No bikes, scooters or dogs on most lawns. Free Sunday band concerts in summer.

Lovely quiet park to walk around. I saw my first ever red squirrel, there are some lovely areas to sit and just take some time out and the restaurant on the park is nice too.

What an unexpected nice surprise! I found his place accidentally on the way to somewhere else. For some reason, this park wasn't mentioned in any of my research as a tourist, maybe because it's a municipal park with free public access and doesn't qualify as an attraction. But, please don't let that put you off. It's a stone's throw from St Helier town centre and is a breath of fresh, tranquil air, both figuratively and literally. I visited the paid-entry botanical gardens nearby, but I think I better enjoyed Howard Davis' Park. It was probably because it was unexpected, but also because it is very well kept and, for a free-to-the-public park, was well groomed and laid out. Walk around the perimeter and enjoy views across the main green from different angles. Then, dive into other areas, such as a walled garden with a water feature, pond, and war graves overseen by St Luke's Church. You'll be reaching for your camera, so make sure you clean that carrot cake off the lens before snapping away. It has to be a solid 5 stars because its value for money (free) can't be beaten, and I spent well over an hour there, so I must have enjoyed it.
