The Five Mile Road, officially Grande Route des Mielles, traces St Ouen's Bay, offering an extensive stretch of coastline. Backed by sand dunes, this thoroughfare is intrinsically linked with Jersey's maritime character and provides expansive ocean views, particularly as day turns to dusk.
St Ouen's Bay, an expansive sweep of sand on Jersey's west coast, holds a significant place in the island's landscape and consciousness. The Five Mile Road was laid out to provide access along this lengthy bay, a decision that has shaped its enduring appeal. Historically, the bay was a natural defence line, marked by ancient earthworks and, more recently, fortifications from the occupation. Today, it is a place of recreation and contemplation, where the rhythm of the Atlantic dictates the pace. The dunes that parallel the road are a fragile ecosystem, home to unique flora and fauna, and contribute to the bay's wild, untamed beauty. This stretch of road offers a consistent connection to the island's elemental western aspect.
Visitors to the Five Mile Road often drive or cycle its length, taking in the panoramic views of the bay. There are numerous informal pull-offs and designated parking areas amongst the dunes, allowing easy access to the beach. Much of the activity here revolves around the sea and sand. The main draw, however, is the sunset. As evening approaches, the sky over the Atlantic transforms, offering a display of colour that draws both islanders and visitors alike to witness the day's end from this western vantage point.
The Five Mile Road runs the entire length of St Ouen's Bay on Jersey's west coast, stretching from La Rocco Tower in the south to L'Etacq in the north. It is readily accessible by car, with Gd Rte des Mielles, Jersey JE4 5RL as a central reference. Numerous access points to the beach and dunes are found along its course, and it is a convenient drive from most parts of the island.
Find a quiet pull-off amongst the dunes just before sunset; bring a warm layer, even on a summer evening, as the sea breeze can be brisk.
The hours around sunset are undoubtedly the most atmospheric, offering the celebrated views over the Atlantic.
