Portelet Bay, nestled on Jersey's south-west coast, offers a tranquil escape. This crescent of sand, accessible via a winding path, feels worlds away from the island's bustling centres, inviting visitors to linger by its calm, often crystal-clear waters.

Tucked beneath the cliffs of Noirmont, Portelet Bay is one of Jersey's more secluded and picturesque destinations. Its distinctive character is shaped by the tidal island of L'Île au Guerdain, also known as Janvrin's Tomb, which sits at the centre of the bay. This small isle is home to the grave of Philip Janvrin, a local sea captain who, having returned to Jersey in 1721 with the plague on board his ship, was refused entry and buried offshore. The bay’s sheltered position means its waters are often calm and inviting, making it a favoured spot for those seeking a peaceful swim. The geology of the surrounding cliffs, with their gnarled rock formations, adds to the bay's rugged charm, a beautiful contrast to the soft sand.

At low tide, it's possible to walk across to Janvrin's Tomb, though care should always be taken with the returning tide. A small eatery is usually open during daylight hours, offering refreshments and a bite to eat.

Portelet Bay is situated in the parish of St Brelade, on the Noirmont peninsula. Access is from a small car park at the top of the cliffs, just off La Rue des Franc Fiefs. It's a short drive from St Aubin and a pleasant walk along the headland paths for those exploring the south-west coast on foot. The surrounding area is primarily residential, with coastal paths offering views towards St Brelade's Bay.
