Cook-your-own seafood BBQ at Faulkner Fisheries

Grill day-boat shellfish on a bunker wall

On the wild north-west tip at L'Étacq, Faulkner Fisheries sells lobster, crab, scallops and oysters straight off the day boats - from a converted German WWII bunker. In summer they fire up communal charcoal BBQs on the sea wall: you choose your shellfish, they hand you the tongs, and you grill it yourself looking out at the Atlantic.

Faulkner Fisheries is first and foremost a working fishery, run by a local diving and fishing family out of a coastal strongpoint built by the German forces during the wartime Occupation. The thick concrete bunker now keeps tanks of live lobster and crab, and the day's catch - scallops, oysters, fish - is sold from the counter. What has made it a quiet island legend is the summer evening ritual: the team lights charcoal grills along the sea wall, and customers cook their own just-bought seafood on the spot, metres from where it was landed. There is no dining room and no frills - you bring your own bread, lemon, drinks and a sense of occasion, and eat with the Atlantic breaking in front of you as the sun drops towards the horizon. It is about as direct a connection between sea and plate as Jersey offers, set against the rawest, most exposed stretch of the island's coast. Simple, seasonal and weather-dependent, it rewards anyone willing to drive out to the far west.

This is a buy-and-grill-your-own setup, not a restaurant. You choose your seafood at the counter, then cook it on the communal charcoal BBQs set up along the sea wall in summer. Bring everything else yourself - bread, lemon, salad, drinks, plates and a warm layer for when the sun goes. Follow basic barbecue sense: keep grills away from anything that can catch, never leave them unattended, and dispose of ashes safely. The wall can be slippery and the tide comes right in, so keep children well back from the edge. It is seasonal and weather-dependent, so check before making the trip out west.

Faulkner Fisheries is at L'Étacq, on the rocky north-western corner of St Ouen, where St Ouen's Bay meets the north coast. It is about a twenty-minute drive from St Helier and best reached by car. The ruined headland castle of Grosnez and the sea caves at Plémont are both a short hop away for a sunset before or after.

Keep BBQs away from gorse and heathland, never leave unattended, keep water or sand nearby, dispose of ashes safely and leave no rubbish. Sea wall can be slippery - keep little ones away from the edge at high tide.
