Within the Maritime Museum, the Occupation Tapestry Gallery offers a poignant and handcrafted narrative. Through twelve meticulously sewn panels, it chronicles the difficult years of German Occupation, providing a unique and intimate perspective on a pivotal period in Jersey's history.
The Occupation of Jersey by German forces between 1940 and 1945 deeply shaped the island's identity. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of its liberation, a remarkable undertaking began: a community project to create a tapestry illustrating these years. Islander groups and individuals contributed their skills, bringing to life the hardships, resourcefulness, and quiet acts of defiance that characterised daily existence under occupation. Each panel is a work of textile art, rich in detail and symbolism, collectively forming a powerful visual history that complements traditional archival accounts. It is a testament to memory and the enduring spirit of the Jersey community.
Visitors will walk through a dedicated exhibit space to view the twelve large, hand-stitched tapestry panels. Each panel depicts a different facet of the Occupation, from the initial invasion and rationing to resistance and eventual liberation. Informative plaques accompany each section, providing context and details about the events and themes portrayed. Allow an hour to fully appreciate the artistry and absorb the historical narratives woven into the fabric of each piece. It offers a reflective and absorbing experience.
Located upstairs within the Maritime Museum on New North Quay in St Helier, the gallery is easily accessible. The quayside setting places you amidst the working harbour, with regular bus services to St Helier town centre. Its position near the historic heart of the port means other maritime exhibits and town attractions are a short walk away.
Take your time with each panel; the intricate details often reveal subtle narratives and symbolism that are easily missed if rushed.
Given its indoor location, the gallery is a fitting choice for a rainy afternoon or any time of year.
