Saturday morning at Central Market

Built in 1882 under a soaring iron-and-glass roof, St Helier's Central Market is where the town still does its weekend shopping. Saturday mornings are the moment to come: fishmongers calling prices, bakers pulling out pastries, the ornate flower fountain at the centre, and a queue at every espresso bar.

The Central Market is the finest piece of Victorian public architecture in Jersey, a covered hall of iron columns and glazed roof that has been the island's larder since 1882. Where many town markets have faded, this one still works as intended: a year-round, six-day food market that locals actually shop at. The ornamental fountain at its heart, surrounded by flower stalls, is a long-standing meeting point, and the aisles around it mix the everyday with the unmistakably Jersey - Jersey Royal potatoes in spring, fresh-landed fish and shellfish, hand-made black butter, and cake stalls that draw their own queues. Saturday is when it comes fully alive, with islanders doing the weekly shop, traders trading banter, and the small cafés and espresso bars filling up by mid-morning. It pairs naturally with the nearby Beresford Street fish market and the lanes of independent shops around it. Unlike much of a holiday island, the market is not staged for visitors; you are simply dropping into the working centre of St Helier on its busiest morning.
