Summer harbour jumps at St Aubin

A St Aubin summer rite, tide permitting

Harbour jumping at St Aubin is not an organised attraction so much as a summer ritual: when the tide is high enough, islanders gather on the old granite wall, watch where the regulars go in, and take turns dropping into the water below. It is sociable, improvised and entirely dependent on the state of the tide.

St Aubin grew up around its harbour, a granite-walled refuge for the cod and oyster fleets long before it became one of Jersey's prettiest waterfront villages. On warm summer evenings, when the tide fills the harbour to the top of the wall, that same wall becomes the stage for a long-standing local rite of passage. Teenagers and grown-ups alike line up, judge the depth, and leap into the sea below to cheers from the quayside. There is no ticket, no operator and no lifeguard - it works on local knowledge, common sense and a careful read of the tide. At low water the harbour empties to rock and mud, and the same drop becomes dangerous, so the window is short and specific. Done sensibly, at high tide and in company, it is a joyful, only-in-Jersey way to cool off; done carelessly it is a hospital trip. Most visitors are happy to watch from the wall with chips in hand, which is its own kind of evening entertainment.

Expect a relaxed, social scene rather than a managed activity - a cluster of locals on the harbour wall on a hot, high-tide evening, taking turns to jump. If you join in, only use the spots people are actively using, only at high tide, and never alone or after drinking. The water is cold even in August. Many people simply come to watch, picking up fish and chips from the harbour or a drink on a nearby terrace and enjoying the atmosphere as the light fades over St Aubin's Bay.

St Aubin sits at the western end of St Aubin's Bay, about a fifteen-minute bus ride or a flat cycle along the old railway path from St Helier. The harbour and its wall are right in the village, ringed by pubs, terraces and fish-and-chip spots. It is one of the few experiences here you can reach entirely car-free.
