Summer cider evening on the Royal Square

The Royal Square is the old civic heart of St Helier - granite façades, the Royal Court and a gilded statue of George II looking over the cobbles. On summer evenings, once the working day winds down, it becomes one of the town's simplest pleasures: a drink outside, conversation across the square, and late light on old stone.

For centuries the Royal Square was where Jersey's public life happened - markets, proclamations, justice and, in 1781, the Battle of Jersey, when British troops repelled a French invasion force here. The gilded statue at its centre is George II, and the surrounding buildings still house the States Assembly and the Royal Court, giving the square a quiet civic weight. Look closely at the cobbles and you will find a 'V for Victory' and the word 'BAILIWICK' laid into the stone - a coded message to Allied aircraft, secretly added by a stonemason during the wartime Occupation. Today the square wears its history lightly. In summer the pubs and cafés around its edges put tables out, and after the offices empty it fills with an easy, unforced crowd: friends meeting, families passing through, drinks lingering as the light fades over the rooftops. There is rarely an event or a reason; the appeal is simply a handsome, traffic-free granite square that islanders have used as a meeting place for generations, and still do.
