Slow cycle along Jersey's Green Lanes

Island pace at fifteen miles an hour

Jersey's Green Lanes are some 70 miles of quiet interior roads where walkers, cyclists and horses have priority and cars are held to 15 mph. Hire a bike in St Aubin or St Helier, follow the green signs inland, and you will find the slow, hedgerow-lined heart of the island - about the closest thing it has to a time machine.

The Green Lane network was introduced to protect Jersey's web of narrow rural roads, and it has quietly become one of the best ways to see the island. Marked by green-painted signs, the lanes wind through the agricultural interior that most visitors, stuck to the coast, never reach. Pedal slowly and the details accumulate: steep-banked hedgerows thick with wildflowers, granite farmhouses and old water troughs, fields of early Jersey Royal potatoes, and honesty boxes at field gates selling eggs, flowers and surplus vegetables for a few coins. With cars limited to 15 mph and giving way, the riding is unhurried and family-friendly, though the lanes do roll up and down across the island's spine. There is no single route - half the pleasure is following a green sign on a whim and seeing where it leads - but most loops can be linked to emerge at a north-coast café or a clifftop view. It is an antidote to the busier beaches, and a reminder that Jersey is a working farming island as much as a holiday one.

Expect gentle, meandering riding on shared rural roads rather than dedicated cycle paths, so you still need to watch for cars at junctions and field entrances. The lanes are well signed in green but interlock confusingly, so a paper map or downloaded route helps - mobile signal drops in the valleys. Surfaces are tarmac and generally good. You can hire bikes, including e-bikes, near the waterfront and link the lanes to the flat railway-path cycleway for a longer day. Pack water and a layer, and bring small change for the honesty boxes you will pass along the way.

The Green Lanes thread through Jersey's interior, touching every parish, with concentrations in the rural north and west. Bike hire is easiest in St Helier and St Aubin, both on the flat coastal railway path. From there you can climb gently inland and pick up the network within a couple of miles, emerging anywhere from St John in the north to St Ouen in the west.
